Partially by design and partially thanks to Mother Nature, there wasn’t a lot of quality to this week, but overall it was a good step in the right direction. I was able to get back into more of a normal training routine for me, and in spite of a significant increase in mileage over what I’ve been running, I felt good doing it.
There’s not a lot worth going into any detail over because mostly I was just out logging miles every day. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t miss any time or really even have to cut back through the 20+ inches of snow we received Wednesday into Thursday. I actually ran during some of the hardest snow on Thursday, and even though it was snowing so hard I could barely see and it was hurting my eyes, I kind of enjoyed it. Definitely wouldn’t want to do it every day though! The Sunday long run was probably my most solid run of the week, but it was also a reminder that I haven’t done many long runs lately and therefore lack strength in addition to speed.
The first part of 2014 has been a struggle, but as I told Coach Blickle on Sunday, my head is back in it, I’m motivated and focused, and I’m ready to start training seriously again. That said, we agreed on a plan, which is for me to do a short base period over the next couple weeks. Counting this past one, that will give me three weeks of logging some good mileage, after which I will take a cutback week. During the short base period, my workouts will be fairly light, with the emphasis simply on getting my legs under me. Then, after the cutback week, I will resume full-scale training, meaning solid volume along with good quality workouts. I have no definite race plans as of the moment, although I’m thinking a rust buster or two during March, possibly in the form of a road race or maybe a low-key track meet, then hopefully getting after it more seriously starting in April. Before I worry about any of that, however, I’ve got a lot of work to do, so that’s the focus for now. Nothing comes easy; do what it takes!
