This week wound up being a little different than planned, but that’s ok. Even though I got a few less miles than I wanted, I think I probably got more out of it the way it turned out than if I’d stuck to the original schedule, so overall I’m happy with it. Basically what happened is I decided on Friday to bag the workout I had planned for that day in favor of running the Greenway Memory Miler Ten Mile race the next morning (recap to come in the next day or so). I was in no mood to do a long, steady state run by myself in the rain and figured the race would not only give me the incentive to do the workout but also give me a nice flat course and some company as well. In the end, I wound up going a little faster than planned, but it worked out just fine and I had fun in the process, so all is well that ends well.

As for the rest of the week, I had a good stride workout on Tuesday with Andrew and Matthew. I’m really starting to like those. I not only enjoy doing them but my legs always seem to feel better the day after, which was a good thing this week because Wednesday was a very solid medium long run. Thanks to some random “person” we came across, Andy, Andrew, and I wound up running a 6:05 fifth mile and several on either side in the 6:20’s. I hit 13 in just over 1:26 for an overall average pace for the run of 6:37. That was definitely faster than planned, but I felt great the whole way. It was just one of those days where everything was clicking. After a couple easy days, I did the race Saturday morning then decided to skip doing a long run this week in favor of another easy day. I actually felt pretty good and towards the end was wanting to run more and thinking I could have handled 13-15 miles just fine, but I still think going shorter was the wiser move. The old me would have definitely done the long run, but the old me spent a lot of time inured, so while I may not always be smart when it comes to training, I’ve at least learned a few lessons over the years.

Anyway, I’m not sure what this week will bring. I’m just going to play it by ear. I’ll probably drop back a few miles and might race a 5k or 10k on Saturday. Right now I don’t seem to have suffered any negative effects at all from Saturday’s effort, but I want to make sure that’s the case before I move forward. Too often in the past I haven’t given myself enough time to recover from long workouts and races and I’ve paid the price accordingly. It’s another one of those lessons I’ve had to learn the hard way and not something I want to repeat. Things are going well right now and I want to keep it that way! Have a good week, everyone!
