Not a bad week of training. My only complaint is being on the tired side throughout and it was never more evident than on Saturday when I was just plain flat for the 10k race/tempo. Still, I rebounded nicely the next day and seem to have handled everything pretty well. If I can just keep knocking out solid week after solid week, eventually I’ll get where I want to be. I’m just gonna have to be patient while the adaptation process occurs, something easier said than done for me because it’s a long, slow process and I’m anything but a patient person. I’ve definitely got to work on the mental side of things as well. I keep catching myself questioning whether or not I can ever get back to the level I once was on and telling myself that maybe I’m just too old and don’t have it any more. I generally get past those thoughts quickly and I really don’t think any of that is the case, but if I’m going to make it, I’ve got to believe I can make it and stop the questioning altogether. I’ve got to stay positive, also something not entirely easy for me to do.

Anyway, as for specifics, the stride workout on Tuesday was rough and might have actually led to me feeling flat later in the week. I’ve always felt like running in the rain takes something extra out of me, which is one of the reasons I hate it, and this was just a nasty, nasty, run. Not only did I get completely soaked then try to turn my legs over in horrible conditions, but I had to alter my route due to darkness, making it hillier and even less conducive to doing strides. I came back with a pretty solid medium long run Wednesday on the greenway with Matthew and Andrew and actually felt pretty good for that one. The pace was solid throughout and fastest towards the end, and I felt very relaxed and comfortable the whole way. I’ll recap Saturday’s race in the near future, but let’s just say it didn’t go as well as I wanted. I came back the next morning with a real solid long run though, covering 17 miles in the hills of WV, and when I say hills I mean hills. According to the Garmin, the route I ran had just over 4,000’ of net elevation change. Yes, 4000 feet! They don’t call it the Mountain State for nothing. The last couple miles were a little tough, but I felt really good for the most part, running lots of miles in the 6:40’s that pretty much felt like I was just cruising.

I’m hoping for a solid week this week then an easier week the week after that. Past that the training will probably get a little sketchy for a couple weeks while I hit the woods for deer season, truly the most wonderful time of the year! As always, hope everyone has a good week!
