It’s been a long time since I’ve actually had any training to summarize. I still don’t have much, obviously, but for the time being something is better than nothing. I honestly have no idea how things are going to go at this point. A tibial stress fracture normally takes 8-12 weeks to heal (sometimes more), and I started back at the 8 week mark, so certainly I’m pushing the envelope a little and will have to keep that in mind as I proceed.
None of my runs this past week were completely pain free, but having been through the stress fracture recovery process far too many times, I didn’t expect them to be. I’ll be working through scar tissue for several weeks (maybe even months), and during that time I’ll have some pain. The key is how bad the pain gets and whether it stays constant or gets worse the more I run. I will say that it did get a little worse over the course of the five days I ran, hence why I decided to take Sunday off and reevaluate with a run on Monday.
I’m basically at a point where I’ll keep running as long as I don’t feel any worse than I did during Saturday’s run. However, even the slightest bit more pain, and I’ll bail out for a while longer. My fitness level is basically non-existent (Friday’s run was a 7:37/mile average with an average heart rate of 168, which is normally where I am during tempo runs), so another week or two off won’t necessarily hurt anything. I am anxious to get restarted, however, so I hope I can keep going. Time will tell.
