So here I am, not quite five days removed from breaking my foot. I’m doing everything I can and then some to speed the healing process and get better, but right now I’m really just waiting on the results of the CT Scan I had yesterday. Once the doctor’s office gets the results and reads them, I should know more about the extent of the damage and what I’m looking at going forward. If it’s bad enough, I’ll probably be facing surgery, which might not be a bad thing. Everything I’ve read about Jones Fractures seems to indicate that the preferred/recommended method of treatment for athletes is to insert a screw. It speeds the healing, may even make it stronger, and gets you back to competition quicker, so if that’s what has to be done I’m not going to shy away from it even though I’ve never had surgery of any sort and am not particularly excited about the idea of it.
As for how I’m doing, really not as bad as maybe I thought it might be. I’ve got a significant amount of swelling, but it seems to be going down at least a little from where it was over the weekend. I’m taking some natural anti-inflammatories and icing as often as I can. I’m also wearing compression socks throughout the day, including while I’m sleeping. I’m supposed to be totally non-weight bearing and in a boot 24/7, but I’m not following that to the letter. The boot actually makes my foot feel worse based on the weight of it and the pressure it puts on my foot, so I’m staying out of it except for when I’m up and about for extended periods of time. I’m not pushing it and am using my crutches for any significant jaunts, but I’m actually able to walk without crutches and the boot and do so pain free. All I have to do is keep my weight on my heel and to the inside of my foot and prevent any weight from hitting the outside of my foot. It’s a slow, very cautious process, but it allows me to get around. I don’t know if I’m right about this or not, but my philosophy is if it doesn’t hurt I must not be stressing it any and therefore not doing any damage. Believe me, when I do put a little stress on it (like putting that stupid boot on), I know about it. As a final sign of me getting at least a little better, I can put my foot flat on the ground now and also take my socks on and off without any pain at all. As sad as it might be, I could do neither Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
I’m hoping the fact that I’ve made some progress the last few days and am doing as well as I am indicates that things aren’t as bad as they could be, but again, I probably won’t really know until I get the results of the CT Scan. This whole ordeal is gonna be one gigantic waiting game, so I might as well get used to being patient (not my strong suit). I’ll check in again once I’ve talked to the doc about my scan and report what I find out. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
