Halfway Through

Obviously this is primarily a running blog, and as such, I don’t have a lot in the way of updates right now. When you’ve been on crutches for 3 weeks and have at least 3 to go, that tends to be the way it is. I seem to be progressing well, but there’s no way to really tell for sure. However, I can say this. I have a list of positive signs and no negative signs whatsoever, with the possible exception of the fact that I still have a lot of swelling, so I’m taking that to mean things are going pretty well.

I’ve made it to a point where I really don’t have any pain to speak of at all in my foot. I’m behaving really well and rarely putting any weight on it, but when I press up on it, something that was excruciating just three weeks ago, I don’t really feel anything now. Additionally, I’ve tested it a few times by putting just a little weight on it for a moment, and that seems ok as well. In fact, if I didn’t know what the problem was and understand that weight bearing while it’s still trying to heal could cause it to relapse, I would definitely be trying to walk around on it. I’m not sure how it would go if I did, but it’s certainly good enough that I would be trying.

While I don’t have any pain in my foot, I can’t say that about my calf. I don’t know what it is, but my calf has been giving me fits ever since this started. I think it stems from the fact that I’m not stretching it any at all, even when walking, so it’s gone from a super active muscle from all the running I do to a completely inactive one. The pain has made its way from the inside to the outside to the front, and it’s a very painful ache when it hurts. It’s almost like a Compartment Syndrome type of pain and is bad enough that it’s hard to concentrate when it’s at its worst. I even start to sweat sometimes it’s so bad. I’m sure some atrophy is starting to set in as well, all stuff I will have to work on when I’m able to start training again.

Anyway, I’m more than halfway through the initial six weeks, which is a crucial time with this injury. I go back to the doc for new x-rays on July 2, and I hope to see that lots of healing has taken place since my first set. I also hope I can get off crutches at that point, but I’m not counting on it. In the meantime, I’ll try to come up with something to keep the blog at least a little more active than it has been of late. Hope everyone is enjoying the recent heat/humidity – ha, ha. In actuality I’d give anything to be out there in it, but at the same time, it’s been bad enough that I’m almost glad I’m missing it. Nasty stuff, but take heart, humidity is the east coast version of altitude training and will pay big dividends this fall!
