One Down

Well, one week down and four to go until my next doctor’s visit. I’m definitely making progress; I just don’t know how much. I’ve been really good since I left the doc’s office last week. After trying to carefully walk around on it for a while, I’ve been totally non-weight bearing for a week now and plan to continue that until my next appointment on July 2. I have less swelling than I did and it’s not nearly as sore as it was. At one point it hurt just to put on my socks, turn over in bed, etc., and all that’s gone now. I can even take my boot on and off and put my shoe on (for driving) without any pain. Still, every now and then I move it wrong or do something that tweaks it, so there’s still plenty of soreness there. It’s just not nearly as bad as it once was.

One of the most frustrating things about this injury is I can’t really do much to speed the recovery and can't do anything to maintain even the least little bit of fitness. Stretching, strengthening, massage etc. is of no use, and cross-training is completely out based on the fact that even pool running would put stress on my foot at this point. It’s really a waiting game, and waiting is not something I’m good at. I am doing ultrasound, as apparently it has proven to speed the healing of this particular injury. I’m also icing and wearing compression socks in the hopes of increasing blood flow, and I’ve improved my diet significantly in addition to taking some supplements that are supposed to be good for bone growth. I’m trying to get lots of sleep too, so I’m doing everything I can. Still, this is going to take time, and patience is not one of my strong suits.

Anyway, that’s about it. Definitely not much exciting going on in my world right now. Hard for there to be when you have to spend the majority of your time sitting. I’m looking forward to seeing the results of the men’s 5k from today’s Diamond League Meet at the Bislett Games. It’s a Lagat vs. Solinsky showdown for the American record. My guess is Lagat will get it if either of them do, but I could definitely be wrong. Solinsky’s 26:59 10k a month ago was nothing short of amazing, so perhaps he can work some magic once again. I hope so, because I’d really like to see him get it rather than Lagat. Actually I’d like to see Ritz hang on to it and lower it even further over the summer, but I’m not so sure that 12:56 isn’t as fast as he can go. Who knows? That’s what makes distance running fun and why we run the races. Should be interesting!
