Greetings, October!

Wow, it seems like I was just writing a post about how August was over and here it is October already. I’m not sure what to make of my September training. On the one hand, I ran 150 miles total, which is pathetic but still 5.5 more than I did in August, and it was all running whereas August’ total included quite a few miles of walking. On the other hand, I missed several days thanks to a sore shin and some various other aches and pains, so I would have like to have run more and added in some quality as well.

I guess what I’m most happy about is the fact I finished the month on the upswing, something I couldn’t say at the end of last month when I was already starting to feel beat-up and run down. I’ve still got a long way to go, but things generally seem to be headed in the right direction for the time being, although that can certainly change at any time with me.

Speaking of the injury front, my shin still isn’t 100%, and I’m starting to wonder if it will be anytime soon. It doesn’t seem to be getting any worse, so my theory is I have a callus or some scar tissue where the stress fracture was and it’s rubbing the soft tissue around the bone and causing pain. If that’s the case, there’s probably not much I can do other than put up with it until it all wears away and functions smoothly again. My achilles is still an issue as well, and that’s the one I would like to address. I’ve been treating it as aggressively as I can and actually making some progress, but it’s still an issue. It doesn’t really cause any major problems, but it’s annoying and probably needs to be better before I’ll be able to run at the level I would like. Finally, my foot seems good, but it has bothered me a little over the past few days. It’s not bad, so it could just be old man syndrome from all the damp weather we’ve had or might not be anything at all. Still, what I’m feeling is right around where the fracture was, so it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.

Anyway, here’s looking forward to October. It’s one of my favorite months of the year, as it’s generally some of the best weather we get. There’s also a lot of good races throughout the month, football starts to get really good, and hunting season is just around the corner. I hope to kick the month off in style tonight with my first workout since starting back, but we’ll see. If all goes well, I’ll continue to add in more quality, get consistent with the drills I started this week, and maybe actually start to build some fitness! Hope everyone has a great month and gets their fall off to a good start!
