This was far from being an ideal training week, but all considered, it was a pretty good one. My upper right wisdom tooth had been bothering me for a while, and towards the end of last week it got to be a real pain…literally. By Monday, I couldn’t even fully open my mouth and eating was an adventure to say the least. As a result, I headed to see an oral surgeon and was told the tooth had to go, as it was not only digging into the back of my jaw but was trying to come in at an angle.

Knowing the rest of the week could be interesting, I got in an extra mile or so Tuesday afternoon, totaling nine on a day that included a few strides (ins-and-outs plus 150m build-ups). I then ran again Wednesday morning since the tooth extraction was scheduled for that afternoon. My time was somewhat limited, so I basically did what I could do, which was a 3 mile warm-up, 3 miles hard, and a 2.5 mile cool-down. Certainly not a workout to write home about it, but it served its purpose. I really wasn’t sure what to expect on Thursday, but as things turned out, I felt better than I did before I had the tooth pulled. I had very little swelling and basically no pain, so I was able to get right back on schedule.

Friday was the best day of the week training wise. We warmed up about 3 miles, including a few strides, then did 4X400 on the track followed by 2X5 min on the road followed by 4X200 back on the track and then a 2.5 mile cool-down. I ran the 400’s at an average of 75, which is pretty good for me right now, stayed in the low-5:30/mile range for the 5 minute pushes on the road, and then ran the 200’s in 37, 36, 35, and 34. Not anything to get excited about, but after all I had been through, including a lack of sleep several nights in a row thanks to tooth pain, I was pleased with it. At the very least it was more of the sort of work I need to be doing and a small step in the right direction.

I finished the week off with a hilly 2 hours and 10 min in Fincastle while accompanying Andrew on the longest run of his marathon build. The run was a of bit of a struggle, to be honest, but I held together ok and actually felt best the last third of the run. There was nothing specific bothering me; my legs just felt tired and heavy, and for whatever reason, it was one of those days where the effort felt a lot hard than the pace it was generating. Of course, some of that may have had to do with the terrain, which included over 2,200 feet of total elevation change.

I’m hoping to get back on track this week with a little better quality to my workouts and a much more normal pattern when it comes to eating and sleeping. I’m still trying to determine what my next goal race should be. The idea of running the OBX Marathon in November isn’t totally off the table, but I’m still convinced that I need to work on my top end speed more than anything else, and while the two aren’t necessarily totally mutually exclusive, they don’t really mesh that well either, so we’ll see. For now it’s all about continuing to be consistent and getting fitter then seeing where that fitness takes me.
