And it all crashes down…
I had wanted to stay on the training for another couple weeks, albeit with slightly reduced volume and lighter workouts, then take a two week break before getting back into the swing of things at the beginning of December. However, my body had other plans, so this ended up being basically a down week. Things went ok through mid-week, but perhaps thanks to running in cold, blowing rain early in the week, I started to feel sick as the week wore on. By Friday, I was feeling pretty worn down and decided to skip doing the light workout I had planned in favor of an easy day. I had every intention of running on Saturday, but as I was getting dressed to head out, I just realized that not only did I not feel good, but my head and heart weren’t in it either. So, I ended my streak of consecutive days of running at 146 and took a rest day.
The good news here is it’s been 21 weeks since I resumed running after being knocked out with a calf injury back in the Spring. That’s the longest streak I’ve been able to put together in years, so that’s a big positive. However, I think running that long without a break and also without being smart and taking some down weeks here and there pretty well burned me out. Additionally, it’s a bit depressing that I was able to train that long but didn’t get great results from it. I’ve blamed the inability to be consistent for not running any faster than I have over the past several years, and I still think that’s a big part of it. I got the consistency this year, though, and still didn’t race that fast, although I found an age grading calculator that equated my fastest 5k performance to a 16:06. I’m not normally a fan of that sort of thing, but at the same time, maybe I’m not as bad at my age as I think.
Regardless, this has been a positive year, and I think I’ve learned some things that will be beneficial going forward. I’m developing a plan right now and will post more on that in the near future. In the meantime, I’m going to take the month of November pretty easy. My body is definitely asking for a break, physically and mentally, so I’m going to comply. I still want to stick with my original plan at least to a certain extent, so the next couple weeks won’t be totally easy unless my body tells me otherwise. After that I’ll take a really easy week followed by a semi-easy week, then the prep for 2013 will begin.
