If not for continuing to battle some fatigue as well as sore hamstrings, this would have been a good week. As is, I’ll call it an okay week because both quantity and quality were somewhat hampered by the aforementioned issues. I’m working on nearly three weeks with the hamstrings now, with the left being particularly bothersome, and I’m perplexed as to what’s going on. My flexibility is good and I’ve never had hamstring issues in the past, but there has to be something that causing them to be overworked. I’m thinking the root cause might be in my lower back or glutes, so I’m going to work that angle this coming week and see if it helps. As for the fatigue, I’m working on even longer with that issue and still looking for answers. I’m just way more tired that I should be for the amount of sleep I’m getting on a nightly basis, and I know from experience that something is “off.” I started a major dietary change, one that you might even call a lifestyle change, this past week to see if that helps. I also came off allergy medicine. If neither of those work, then it might be time to go to the doc and get some blood work done to see if that will give me some answers.
Moving on to the specifics of the week, it was wet, real wet. I think I got rained on at least a little every day except Thursday and Sunday. Unlike some people, I’m not a fan of running in the rain, so it was annoying to say the least. At the same time, fortunately I never got poured on, so that was good. It was also a non-factor for the Wednesday workout, which was a fartlek of 5/4/3/2/1 min on with half the previous interval as recovery. I ran well enough that evening, managing to stay with Andrew stride for stride, but it was a struggle. I felt like I had to run much harder than I should have to hit the paces we were running.
After easy days on Thursday and Friday, I decided to go ahead and take a shot at the GCBC Road and Trail Challenge 10k on Saturday. I wasn’t sure I would race until the night before, mainly because of how bad my hamstrings felt after the Wednesday workout. Fortunately, they didn’t bother me at all during the race, and I was able to grab the overall win. I’ll try to post a race recap in the next day or two. After the race and Sunday was a different story with the hamstrings though. In fact, Sunday’s run was no fun at all. It was frustrating because aside from the hamstrings I felt pretty good for coming off a solid effort the day before, but they pretty much ruined what would have otherwise been an enjoyable run.
My objective this week is to try to fix my hamstrings. As I mentioned before, I’m going to work the angle of the problem being in my lower back and glutes and see if working on those two areas helps. I’d like to have a good week of training because the next two are likely to be poor thanks to work travel. I’m actually looking forward to getting the next three weeks out of the way so I can hopefully settle into a more normal schedule thereafter. I’m down to less than two months before I hit the Masters class, and shortly after that point, I’d like to be as fit as I’ve been in a while and able to do some good racing. I’ve definitely got some things to overcome first though. What’s that saying? Oh yeah: Nothing comes easy, so do what it takes!
