Not much to report this week, unfortunately. I felt sort of off most of the week, then really struggled through my run Thursday evening, nearly bailing out several times. In the end though, I gutted it out, and not only did the 7.5 miles I had planned but also did hill sprints plus drills, plyos, and dynamic stretches after. I even did my general strength routine after I got home, and I felt pretty good about having “toughed it out.” Shortly after I went to bed that night, however, it all came crashing down. I started absolutely freezing and just couldn’t get warm. Things finally got a little better, but I didn’t sleep much at all the entire night. Friday I felt like I’d been hit by a truck and deteriorated as the day went on. As I type this, I’m on day five of not feeling well, and while I finally seem to be on the upswing, I’m still nowhere near 100% and therefore nowhere near ready to resume running. I actually don’t remember the last time I missed this much running due to being sick.
That said, I’m pretty frustrated at the moment. I was already behind where I wanted to be, but after last week I finally felt like I was starting to get on track and build some momentum. This has obviously killed that, but there’s not a whole lot I can do about it. So, instead of feeling sorry for myself, I’ll focus on getting over whatever I’ve contracted then basically start from square one and move forward. In fact, maybe I needed something to make me hit the reset button anyway. My big focus for the year is hitting the USATF Masters All-American standards as well as competing in the USATF Outdoor National Championships in July, and I still have plenty of time to accomplish those goals and also run well in a variety of other races. Needless to say the first part of this year is not going to go as planned, but all the major targets are still attainable so that’s ok. After all, it wouldn’t be as fun if it was easy!
