So, this morning's run was 1 hour 1 minute and 34 seconds long during which I covered 9.01 miles at an average pace of 6:49 with an average heart rate of 168 (max of 180) and included 1614 feet of ascent and 1649 feet of descent. My mile splits (which I figured out how to record automatically without hitting a single button) were 7:37, 6:54, 6:52, 6:41, 6:27, 6:35, 6:39, 6:33, and 7:12. I'll spare you the details of my heart rate, elevation change, pace, etc. during each mile, but I have that data just in case anyone is interested - ha, ha. Can you tell I like my new Garmin? In all seriousness, that thing is VERY cool and is perfect for a numbers nerd like myself. It even provides a map of the course once you download the data to your computer. I may wind up using it even more than I thought I would.
As for the run itself, like most of my runs this week, it went surprisingly well and felt surprisingly good. Running in the 6:30's wasn't as easy as I would like, but I really wasn't pressing, just putting in a nice steady effort. I was actually surprised the splits were as fast as they were and kept thinking they would slow. I forced myself to back way off in the last mile just to be on the safe side, but at no point did I feel like I couldn't speed up if I needed to and not once did I have anything in the way of aches/pains. The first mile is a little confusing, because I really didn't feel like it was that slow, but from there on out everything was pretty consistent, including my heart rate.
Speaking of my heart rate, I haven't worn a monitor in a long time, but wearing one the past couple days has told me two things. First, just as I observed when using one in the past, I think my heart rate tends to run higher than the average person's and my max is higher as well. It doesn't take much effort at all for me to get in the 160's and 180's during a workout used to be common. My resting heart rate is usually in the low 40's, so I have a huge range. I think all that is probably a good thing when it comes to running ability, and it's nice to see it hasn't changed much over time. Additionally, I watched my heart rate after I stopped running today and it dropped like a rock. I went from 162 to under 100 in probably less than a minute. That tells me I may be a little fitter than I would have thought for all the time I've missed.
Anyway, I just had to post something about my new, nerdy tool. I can tell I'm gonna have lots of fun with it. I'll do a recap of this past week's training sometime tomorrow. For now, it's time to go watch some football. Oh, two more quick notes. First of all, WVU 76, #14 Ohio State 48 in b-ball yesterday. It was a good day to be a Mountaineers fan! Second, today's fastest mile and highest HR was during the part of the run where I passed by the house where the dog got me a couple weeks ago. I didn't see a thing of him today nor did I feel myself increase the pace, but obviously I was ready for him.
