Updates, Rants, etc.

This has been a less-than-ideal week in terms of running. It started off pretty good. I had by far my best run since all this mess started on Monday and followed it up with a decent day on Tuesday. I went 6 and 6.5 miles respectively those days, which looking back may have been a bit too aggressive for where I was (not totally pain free). I started a run on Wednesday and bagged it pretty quickly as I could tell my hip was worse. It wasn’t bad like it has been, but it would have caused major issues if I’d continued to run and there’s certainly no need to push anything right now. I believe I’m on the right track in terms of correcting the underlying issue that’s been there for so long, but I’m going to have to be patient while this latest injury settles down and while I work through what I’m sure is years and years of built up scar tissue and incorrect muscle memory. All I can do is try to stay focused and be optimistic that I WILL eventually get there.

I have to admit it’s frustrating though. When I had to shut it down on Wednesday I was pretty much ready to just throw in the towel. I have a coworker who broke his ankle right around the same time as my hip went out, and he’s gone through two different casts and gotten off crutches in the amount of time this has take me. I think he may be farther along in the recovery process now too. It’s aggravating to think something like a bone fracture can resolve itself faster than my problem, which never stopped me from walking or caused a need for crutches or anything, but that’s the way it goes.

Speaking of frustration, I’ve just about had it with the television coverage of the World Track and Field Championships. It’s a complete joke. Basically if it’s not a sprint event, it’s not gonna get coverage, even if there are Americans in the field who are doing well. They can show 20 min of Usain Bolt walking around the track after the 200m, posing with the mascot, racing the mascot, lying down on the track, etc., etc., but they can’t show a single step of the men’s 800m heats in which two Americans moved on. They can also show more of Bernard Lagat in a wheelchair getting taken to medical treatment because he got spiked than they can of the actual race in which he got spiked. It’s ridiculous. I can’t watch the races live online, but I guess if I really want to see them I just need to go to Universal Sports’ web site and watch the replays. At least that way I’ll get to see all the races and get some knowledgeable commentary from announcers who have a clue what they’re talking about.

Which leads me to my final rant. The guy doing post race interviews is an absolute moron! Basically all he tries to do is stir up trouble and create drama. If you don’t win, he wants you to admit that you’re so completely devastated that life can’t possibly go on. He also wants people to have to publicly admit they don’t think they can beat people like Bolt. All I can say is it’s a good thing he’s not interviewing me. He’d get one or two polite responses, but if he kept after it with me like he’s done with everyone else, he’d get the reaction he was looking for.......and then some!

Anyway, I guess major television networks will never realize they can’t structure their broadcasts to attract the average person. The average person was NOT watching track and field last night. For the most part, only track and field fans were. All you achieve when you mangle the broadcasts like they’ve been doing is turn off the actual track and field fans so even they don’t watch. I know I’ve been channel flipping and may not tune in at all tonight as preseason football and the Nationwide race are looking much better compared to what I’ve been seeing. That’s all for me.
