This was one of those weeks that was both positive and negative. The positive side is I was able to run 6 of the 7 days (probably would have done all 7 if not for working on my mom’s plumbing) and was able to work up to a 41 min run on Saturday. I did all this without my hip or hamstring getting any worse. The negative side is none of my runs were totally pain free. I could pretty much feel either my hip or my hamstring the whole time. Like I said, it didn’t get any worse, but it was always there.
That said, I’m not sure where I am right now with this “comeback.” The fact that it’s not getting any worse the more I run is encouraging. Also, I don’t have any tightening-up or aching after runs, which is also a good sign. Those things almost lead me to think that the injury itself is healed and the problem is either scar tissue and/or muscle atrophy, both of which could fully be expected after what I’ve been through. I heard something interesting over the weekend that said it takes 21 days to change muscle memory. Since I know my body has been trying to protect my injured hip for a long time now, if it really does take three weeks to change muscle memory, that could be what I’m fighting. That would also mean I’ve got a ways to go with improving my arm swing and form too.
Anyway, all I know to do at this point is keep moving cautiously forward. If things get any worse, I’ll take a few days off. If they stay the same, I’ll keep battling through for at least a while longer then re-evaluate. Hopefully if I’m patient, keep treating everything, and continue to do my exercises and work on my form, I’ll eventually get to 100% without having to take any more time off, but there’s no way to know other than by doing it and seeing what happens. Time will tell.
