Welcome Fall, My Favorite Season

Fall seems to have officially arrived, and I’m loving it. Between the cooler temps and the gains I’ve made in fitness over the past month, the average pace of my runs is getting faster and faster while at the same time the effort is feeling easier and my average HR is lower. Good stuff! I still have a long way to go, but like I’ve been saying, I like the type of training I’m doing right now and am pleased with the direction things seem to be headed.

Last night I added a few light drills at the end of my run. I’m going to start introducing these and working my way towards doing them around 3 times a week. I’ll be doing some bounding, high knees, butt kicks, and kick outs, and might incorporate a couple more before all is said and done. Even though it was a very light session, I definitely felt the effects last night, so I think this will be a good addition to my training program. It should help me build a little flexibility and speed and also be good for injury prevention, all of which are good things!

Since I’ll be running on flat terrain at the beach all next week, tonight I will run a BIG “heel” (as the Kenyans say). I’m gonna hit the Peakwood loop and it should be interesting. I’ve never done it anytime other than the annual Christmastime run and I’ve never done it with my Garmin, so I’m looking forward to the seeing the elevation profile. I’m sure it’ll be nasty all the way around.

That’s all for me for this week. I want to conclude by wishing Andrew and Matthew good races this coming Sunday. Matthew will be toeing the line at the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis, where he should pick up a nice big PR, and Andrew will be lacing them up at the Army Ten Miler in Washington DC. Both guys are nice and fit, so hopefully they’ll have good days, excellent weather, and will be able to reap the rewards of all the hard training they’ve done. Good luck, guys! Get out there and roll!
