Making Progress

Three runs into the week and so far things have been going pretty well. I’m not completely pain free, but I’m hanging in there and feel like I’m making progress. After doing 5 miles on Monday and 5.5 on Tuesday, I planned on taking an easier day yesterday. However, I was feeling pretty good, and since I figure I better take advantage of the good runs when I get them right now, I stretched it out to 6 miles. I did it all on the greenway, and it was my second longest run in the last four months (man, that’s sad!). I’ll play it by ear tonight and see what happens. If I feel good again, I may do another 6. If I don’t feel quite as good, I may drop back to 3.5 – 4. The only goal I have right now is to get out there most every day and try to build some consistency.

On a different but very much related subject, I don’t like wearing the same pair of shoes day after day, so after running in new shoes, the Brooks Ghost (pictured below), the past couple days, I went back to my old trainers, the Brooks Defyance, last night. Now don’t get me wrong. The Defyance are a good neutral training shoe and I like them and will likely continue to use them from time to time. However, after running in the much more flexible Ghost for a couple days in a row, they almost felt stiff and clunky last night. That told me quickly that I much prefer the more flexible shoe, and I think making a transition towards that type of shoe will be good for me. This is one of several strategies I’m putting in place with the hopes of keeping myself healthy. More on that to come.
