Wow. The month of July is almost gone. For the most part, it’s seemed long, but at the same time it’s difficult to watch the entire summer pass away with me on the sidelines. I’m now 10 weeks in a boot and on crutches (although the last few weeks I’ve followed that routine less and less), and almost 13 weeks from when I think the break officially occurred. That leaves one week until my next doctor’s appointment when something is going to happen one way or another.
This has changed several times now, so at this point, here’s the plan. I’m starting to do some walking now and coming up on my toes with no pain at all. I’m also starting to do calf raises, again with no pain or any problems afterward (aside from the fact that my achilles and ankle are VERY weak). Based on that, I’m just going to continue to gradually increase, and I do mean GRADUALLY, what I’m doing until I go back to the doc for new images a week from today. Depending on what the images look like and what he has to say, I’ll just go from there. Unless the images look really bad, to him and to me, and unless he has some really hard evidence and reasons as to why I’m still in a vulnerable position, I will begin self treating from there on out. On the other hand, if the images do look bad even to me and he wants to do surgery or several more weeks on crutches, I will seek a second opinion with an orthopedist and possibly even wind up going the surgery route depending on how that second opinion turns out.
I’m really pretty optimistic at this point though. I don’t doubt the doc will continue to be very conservative with me next week, but as long as he doesn’t say (and provide proof) that things are really bad, I feel pretty good about starting to ratchet up what I’m doing and maybe even starting to run again in the not too distant future. I figure I’ll start out on the track with a run a minute/walk a minute routine, and as long as things go well build from there.
In terms of my illness, everything seems to be about gone now. Not that I ever doubted it necessarily, but let me tell you, pneumonia is rough stuff! Needless to say, I’m glad that's over and I'm looking forward to August and hoping I can have a really good month and salvage at least a little of the summer. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
