Not gonna spend a lot of time rehashing this past week since it all came crashing down on Saturday. It was actually a pretty good week up to that point. I seemed to recover well from the hilly, 13.5 mile long run and had good recovery days on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday I decided to push it a little and probably overdid it a bit, as I felt kind of tired and flat all the way to the race on Saturday, but still, overall I was feeling the best I had in a long time and there was no problem with my foot at any point in time until a little over halfway through the race. If I’d been pushing through pain or even ignoring slight warning signs, I’d say I got what I deserved, but when all systems are go and something happens that suddenly, it really blindsides you and there's not a lot you can do about it.

So where does that leave me? Well, I have an appointment with the foot/ankle specialist (actually his assistant to start out with) at Virginia Orthopedic scheduled for 10:00AM tomorrow morning. This guy is also their sports med specialist, so he seems to be about as good of a person as I can see around here. I should know more about the extent of the damage once the visit is over.

In the hours after the race, I was practically sure I had re-broken it. It had all the same symptoms as last time and seemed really bad. However, I’m about 72 hours removed now, and it’s a lot better. It never has swollen up quite as bad as it did previously nor has it gotten as sore. It’s still bad and I can’t really put much weight on the outside of my foot, but there has been significant improvement from where I was Saturday afternoon to where I am now. I definitely didn’t have that rate of improvement last time, so I guess it’s possible I just really irritated it and didn’t actually fracture something again. I’m not counting on it though, and regardless, it’s a big problem and very concerning.

Obviously I want to get this to a point where I can race again, and apparently it wasn’t to that point, although I was racing in trainers and not a whole lot faster than my tempo runs, so I’m not sure what the difference was that caused it to go. Perhaps it just needed more time to get stronger. Perhaps it’s needed a screw all along and this was bound to happen sooner or later. Perhaps I need some orthotics to help take pressure off that part of my foot. Who knows? All I can do is hope for the best and hope I not only get some answers tomorrow but also get a permanent solution.
