Since I’ve got two weeks to recap and I’m really busy on top of that, this will be relatively brief with not much in the way of details. I knew coming into this two week stretch that training would be very difficult. Not only would I be traveling and having to run in different locations, but I would be working hard as well. It was a nasty combination and I had resigned myself to losing some fitness along the way. That said, my goal was to do as much as I could and thereby maintain as much fitness as possible and I think I achieved that goal for the most part. I wimped out a couple of times, so I could have done better, but I also could have done a whole lot worse all considered.

Most of the first week was spent at Wintergreen Resort, which is NOT a place to go for a running vacation. If I’d had a car and could have driven off the mountain to do my runs, it might have been alright. However, running from the resort itself is nearly impossible. I likened it to running off the top of a pyramid. Whichever direction you went started downhill, meaning coming back was uphill, and I’m not talking gradual. There were times it was steep enough that I just wanted to stop and walk. Furthermore, the Fitness Center didn’t open early enough in the mornings for me to be able to run on the treadmill and I had no time to run in the afternoon/evening. As a result, after the first couple runs I basically got frustrated and just gave up and wound up taking a couple days off. The fact I was getting only five hours of sleep a night didn’t help either.

The second week I traveled to and from San Diego, which was in direct opposition to Wintergreen when it came to running. I missed the day I traveled there since I had to get up at 3:00AM EST and didn’t finish up with work related stuff until after 10:00PM PST, but after that I got in a couple of good runs along the bay. It was crazy how many people were out running and it was also nice to be able to cruise along at 6:50 per mile and have it feel more like 7:10 pace thanks to the flat terrain and nearly perfect weather conditions.

Anyway, there’s the past two weeks. Not optimal by any means, but I did what I could with the situations I was dealt. My schedule continues to be pretty busy over the next few weeks, but at least I’ll be at home. I hope to get back into my routine and back on track when it comes to training. I realized during yesterday’s long run that I had exactly 30 days until I hit the Masters class. I’m nowhere near where I would like to be for that event, but I’ve got a month to get closer then on beyond that to really build some fitness and see what I can do. Nothing comes easy; do what it takes.
