Training Summary: 2/8 - 2/14

Ok, I said it last week and I’ll say it again this week. I hope this is the last time I don’t have anything to recap. With the exception of a twinge here and there, my knee seems to be fine now, including when I do some short jogs to test it. I’m also confident that my shin is 100% now, so I know I’m getting close. I’ll be heading out tonight for my first real test, and hopefully it will be the start of a true comeback, not only in terms of getting back to running consistently but also making the changes I know I need to make to run fast again.

Changing subjects, this past weekend was Kaitlyn’s third birthday. We started out by attending Curious George Live at the Salem Civic Center Saturday afternoon. We weren’t sure how it would go over, but I won some tickets, so we gave it a shot and it turned out really well. Not only did Kaitlyn have a good time, but seeing Curious George on stage helped her conquer her fear of Rooney, the Roanoke College mascot. Rooney is a hawk, although Kaitlyn has referred to him as a “big duck” all season, and she has not wanted him anywhere near her until Saturday night. In what was the final home game of the season (a debacle of a game in a disastrous season for the Maroons), not only did she let him get close, but she even gave him a high five! We concluded the birthday weekend with a party Sunday night. Kaitlyn chose Bojangles as the location, which was pretty funny in and of itself. Wonder how many kids birthday parties are held at a chicken joint – ha, ha. She had a blast though, which is what matters most, and altogether it was a great weekend.

It’s pretty wild to think about where we were three years ago in comparison to now. I think Leslie and I are still recovering from the rough start she had, but we are truly blessed to have such a beautiful, smart, healthy little girl who loves life and lives it to the fullest. Looking back, I don’t know if I would change our experience or not. It would have been nice to bypass nearly two months in the hospital and all the drama that went with it, but now that we’re past it, it definitely makes us appreciate what we have and probably made us stronger people and drew us closer together as well. I’ve always said that things happen for a reason, and while I may never fully understand, I can’t argue with the end result! All is well that ends well, as they say.

***As a quick update to this post, Leslie just called after seeing Kaitlyn's doctor for her three-year checkup. "Perfect" was his assessment. Would have been nice if he had told us something we didn't already know, but oh well ;-) I'd still like to see some of those NICU docs who told us she would be right back in the hospital (amongst other bad things). I guess sometimes love and prayer are more powerful than medicine.
